Thanks for the reply :) It seems I've been using desktops rather than viewports. There appears to be some conflict between compiz / beryl / gtk-window-decorator (I'm quite new to all this). I've changed the number of workspaces in the GL desktop panel back to 1, then I was able to increase the number of viewports by right clicking on the workspace switcher. It's a bit of a mix-up actually, because I was having problems with original desktop effects (I was losing window bars when I turned them on, and could not find a solution on the forums), so I installed emerald, but then added the 'gtk-window-decorator --replace' command to the session manager, because that got me the original window decorations back AND I could also use the desktop effects without losing window bars. The problem is when I now want to start the GL desktop panel, the window bars switch back to emerald, and I have to execute the "gtk-window-decorator --replace" command again before the GL desktop can be launched. Also, when I do this, the viewports are back to 1 again. It looks like GL desktop overrides the original workspaces settings. I suppose I've made a bit of a mess here :)
