Public bug reported: Binary package hint: util-linux
cfdisk is apparently putting bad info on disk, but poking the kernel correctly and directly when making large partitions. Everything looks fine until the first reboot. I hear this is a known problem with parted, but want to let you know cfdisk is also affected. To reproduce: a) Get a terabyte drive b) Make a giant partition on it + mount (I formatted xfs) c) Everything is happy happy joy joy d) reboot e) partition is gone! udev doesn't make a device, manually running mknod doesn't help. Bad! f) re-run cfdisk (which sees the partition) and write it again. g) everything mounts happy happy ... at least for this boot cycle # cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10 DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10" Running a hardy kernel # cat /proc/version Linux version 2.6.24-8-server ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-1ubuntu2)) #1 SMP Thu Feb 14 20:42:20 UTC 2008 # apt-cache policy util-linux util-linux: Installed: 2.13-8ubuntu1 Candidate: 2.13-8ubuntu1 Version table: *** 2.13-8ubuntu1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com gutsy/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Thread is here with more details. http://oss.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2008-03/msg00030.html ** Affects: util-linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- cfdisk creates invalid (!) partion tables on disk https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/198248 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
