Sorry, it's not the "use assistive technologies" box. Go to gnome-at- properties then keyboard settings and then mouse buttons. (or mouse keys, I don't know if the words are correct in English, my machine is Finnish:) For me setting mouse keys to "off" fixed the problem.
I have no problems any more, numeric keys work.
