I haven't been able to reproduce the first behavior you described (with
the arrows), but the second one definitely happens.

To clarify: Open an instant message window with a buddy who has a buddy
icon. Double-click twice on their name/alias, and it will turn to an
editable text box. While it is in this state, double-click their buddy
icon and a second name will appear, in the non-editing mode. It only
seems to work when you have one window open (i.e. no other messages in
tabs in the same window). I have attached a screenshot.

I'm running pidgin 2.2.1.
