On further inspection, this may actually be a problem with our compiz- fusion plugins packaging. According to this page http://wiki.compiz- fusion.org/Plugins/Mousepoll the mousepoll plugin is required for showmouse to work. However, mousepoll is not installed by either compiz- fusion-plugins-main or compiz-fusion-plugins-extra. So, even when enabling the plugin via gconf editor as i noted above, it still doesnt work. compizconfig-settings-manager may be refusing to enable the plugin because it cant find mousepoll.
