I have exactly the same problem, on my three-year old Dell Inspiron 6000 with a
Ati Mobility X300.
When I switch to tty1-6 I only See a blinking cursor.
According to ps -e I have 6 Instances of Getty up and running
Some Additional Info:
I have no problem Switching back to X with Alt+F7
It worked on Gutsy before I updated using update-manager -d
It doesn't help Switching to ttyX during Usplash.
