The new version of gnome panel data has been released without a matching gnome panel, and apparently with dependencies set up such that it's possible for people to end up with panel-data automatically upgrade and gnome-panel automatically uninstalled. If that's not a bug in the packages themselves, it's at least a bug in procedure.
