I got hit by this with updates today, suddenly compiz which had been
working fine refused to start because I was using the same driver I had
been using all along. What was even more annoying was that after
locating the blacklist mention in the changelog, there was no mention
anywhere of how to override this behavior, so at the very least I think
mention of ATI and use of SKIP_CHECKS needs to be made in the manpage
for compiz.real, and in the output of compiz when it refuses to start
due to the ati driver being detected.

BTW - my working card is the same as Miguel Martinez card above.
