Still present in the latest (as of a week or so ago) Edgy and kernel.org kernels. I have done more background research on the problem, and it is to do with PCI express support. On the one hand, the kernel developers seem to be still learning about it, and on the other, more seriously, an awful lot of BIOS' do not implement it correctly, causing system hangs at boot if it is used anyway. The kernel developers are gradually adding workaround support for those BIOS', but there are still quite a few systems which hang if mmconfig is enabled. I would really suggest that you disable mmconfig PCI probing when you build the Edgy kernel, as PCIe support is probably somewhat less important than supporting many systems reliably.
