Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 alternate i386 installed on an old pentium 3 HP Vectra
Slimline with 256MB RAM, 10GB SCSI HD and integrated Intel sound and NIC.

Installation worked fine 1st time (BIOS large disk access mode set to DOS)
Partitioning default use entire HD (set to "/" for first 9.6GB primary 
partition, and second 477MB set for swap, as extended partition sda5)
Connected to internet for all updates to install on 1st install.
GRUB loaded ok system hangs on "Starting Up ..." message.

second attempt 
as above except set BIOS large disk access mode to Other.
Partitioning as follows
/boot ext2 200MB 1st primary partition
swap        500MB 2nd primary partition
/              remainder 9.7GB

Connected to internet for all updates to install on 1st install.
GRUB loaded ok system hangs on "Starting Up ..." message.


Note: Similar problems were experienced with a Vector Linux 5.9 install.
Xubuntu Feisty had been successfully installed on an identical box earlier.
