This problem occurs in XUbuntu 7.10, up-to-date with repos as of 24 March 2008.
My wife reported the problem to me. Restarting the computer causes the print job to start. /var/logs/cups/error_log as the following: E [25/Mar/2008:03:13:40 +0000] PID 5567 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip) stopped with status 1!
