Toby, I'm having the same problem. I try also with Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04_alfa 6_i386 Desktop: kernel 2.6.22-14, X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90, intel_drv 2.2.1 ) and my svideo tvout stops working: no image at all , only a dark TV screen.
BTW: I use http://www.high-techproductions.com/ColorBars2.gif to get a pair of pictures (attached): 1. TV and laptop with W. Vista 2.
