Have same trouble here now with 8.04 updated to day. Here are my findings:
When saving pdf document with png compression, blank pages. When saving pdf document with lzw compression black pages. However my finding is that this trouble is not due to the compression. I have run several tests now, and they only occur when using the downsample option. This is something that must have been broken latelly since I have used gscan2pdf all since 7.04 in both ubuntu and xubuntu.
