Hi, same problem here too ...
See the bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/205000
My acer 1524wlmi with gutsy worked fine without any problems.
When I upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04 alpha6, wlan0 did not worked anymore.
I don't belive it depends from wpa, but maybe from network-manager, or dhcp ...
or maybe the new kernel ...
On my last log I can see only a dhcp problem ... NM try to get an ip address
but NM goes on timeout (kde 3.5.9)
.... I have tried on wpa, with o without encrypt, disabling all the firewall
flushing the rules, etc. etc. ...
eth0 works fine ...
We need of a true linux guru ... or a shining upgrade ... :)
