A little more research has shown that (as they say at Microsoft) ..... "It's not a bug, it's a 'feature'".
Somebody decided Kubuntu needed some "dumbing down". *sigh* The new and improved kubuntu-default-settings package is now "minty fresh" and includes... /etc/kubuntu-default-settings/hidden-root /etc/kubuntu-default-settings/hidden-media PLEASE get rid of this.
