As you suggested I removed ~/.pulse/* and ~/.pulse-cookie and logged in again. No improvement :( BTW, I also checked the applicable parts (AFAICT) of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems (most is, sadly, about Alsa). E.g., I am a member of the pulse* groups
