I have run the SUSE script sudo sh -c 'cd /usr/share/hplip/data/models; sh /home/till/ubuntu/hplip/create_hal_global_fdi_from_models.dat > /usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/20-hplip-scanners.fdi'
and removed a spurious "models.dat" from the first line of the resulting .fdi file.
