The last time only one drive was involved, and the folder "disappeared"
even though I did not remove and reattach the USB flash drive.

The first time is maybe two months ago. I honestly do not remember
exactly what I did, but I know I would have blamed myself if I did
something obviously wrong, like removing the drives while copying. I
did, however, remove the first drive after copying to my hard drive, and
then placed the other drive in the same USB port (without changing any
fstab or such).

I don't trust cut/paste in nautilus, now maybe especially not to/from
FAT drives.
