I updated today from 7.10 to 8.04 beta (using sudo update-manager -d) and had the same problem, but I fixed it just booting with 386 kernel and running
sudo update-initramfs -k all -u Now the GENERIC kernel boots perfectly. Anyway, by default the active kernel is the 386 one, not the GENERIC (I think this was commented in another bug), so I had to modify /boot/grub/menu.lst, putting GENERIC as the default kernel again. -- Could not boot linux-generic after update (Dapper->Edgy).
