Sebastian, no, it seems to be gone. I have recently installed Dapper on another box and the problem hasn't occurred. I can't remember whether I had installed all the samba stuff before I tried it on that machine, although I suspect I did. In any case I still think the most likely explanation has something to do with not installing one of the necessary samba-related packages.
