I have the same problem using ATI Radeon 9550 and Hyundai ImageQuest Q910 monitor on Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 Beta. System is starting in very low resolution. In 7.04 everything worked ok.
I attach 3 files: xorg.conf from Ubuntu 7.04 (working), xorg.conf created with dislayconfig-gtk from Ubuntu 7.10 (not working), and my custom xorg.conf for Ubuntu 7.10 (working). Producer recommended max. resolution is 1600x1200/85Hz, in system xorg.conf is 2048x1536/60Hz!!!
