Neither of the PDFs have images. From the gscan2pdf help: Imports any format that imagemagick supports. PDFs will have their embedded images extracted and imported one per page. gscan2pdf isn't designed to be a replacement for Acrobat, which it would have to be to correctly import any PDF. The PDF import was added to be able to reimport a PDF written by gscan2pdf. I have been considering an "append to PDF" which would allow the possibility to add pages to the end of documents like those you posted, but that is, at the moment, just on the wishlist.
