A very simple case would be something like this:

/etc/auto.master
******************************
/mountpoint /etc/auto.fileDescribingMount

/etc/auto.fileDescribingMount
******************************
directoryToMountTo -opts /dir/to/mount

Working example:
/etc/auto.master
******************************
/ftp /etc/auto.ftp

/etc/auto.ftp
******************************
myDir -ro,soft ftp.example.com:/pub/myDir
