Public bug reported:
When trying to activate desktop effects (compiz) in the appearance menu
in ubuntu hardy heron WITHOUT compiz-capable drivers (only tested with
nv, but probably applies to others) with synaptic open, an error message
as depicted in the attachment shows up saying that it was unable to get
a lock on the apt database. However, after this, ubuntu claims that it
installed new drivers successfully, when it clearly didn't:
"Please run "Appearance/Desktop Effects" again after restarting the
computer, when the new graphics driver is active."
This could confuse new users to Ubuntu.
