Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-14-generic

The kernel driver loads OK, but trying to start X with the fglrx driver
freezes the machine.

This looks similar to other reported problems, but in those cases only the
display was black. Changing the config file to include DefaultDepth also didn't
solve this problem.
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3850

I will try the manual method from
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide

I managed to start X from a ssh connection to try to get some logs, but
that didn't work. Does X needs a flag to log to stderr?

** Affects: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
