I'm using 8.04 now.....Kubuntu. It hangs upon log out. Black screen. Have not had a chance to try some of the work arounds suggested above. Like ctrl-del-backspace --before logout. Or the power manager daemon in the sessions manager as posted by Andrew Lambert.
Strangely, I've used Kubuntu 6.10 thru 8.04 and this is the very first time I've come across this problem.
