Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon
After upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy, X inevitably quits about three minutes into session. After re-login, second session is stable. Also, Compiz would not start via "Desktop Effects Panel" or any other way, even after doing the standard ATI workarounds. After cleaning out Gnome settings as described here: http://linuxfud.wordpress.com/2007/02/14/how-to-reset-ubuntugnome-settings-to-defaults-without-re-installing/ Everything worked great--all sessions were stable including first one, and Compiz was enabled and worked out of the box.
