This bug is so bad that I decided to remove all traces of PulseAudio
from my system using synaptic. (Ctrl+F for pulseaudio and 'Compltely
removed' all packages that had few dependencies) and rebooted, in which
it started using ALSA and I can now listen to music while I code or
browse.

Sorry PulseAudio, maybe next release.
