I did not experienced any boot problems after applying the Patch. The problem is more serious "without" the Patch than with it, because basically, if you do not apply this patch, shutdown hangs waiting and you have to manually shut down the pc or reset which is dangerous.
It should be an alternative, maybe you could try to umount cifs mounts BEFORE killing the SMBFS service, that is the root of the problem.
