Followup: it's not quite what I thought.... Since the default nautilus view doesn't show permissions and owners, I didn't realize the "12 GB Volume" was owned by root, which explains why Tbird can't write to it.
There's still a problem, though. Trying "sudo chown -R me /media/data" said "operation not permitted". It seems like root ought to be able to give ownership to someone else? I unmounted it and then mounted it as a user, which changed both owner and group to that user. Then, for instance, Tbird could write to it without a problem. But having to unmount and remount partitions just to make them accessible to the logged in user seems less than ideal. Maybe I have some mistake in my fstab?
