Happened to me as well, after upgrading to Ubuntu Hardy Beta from Ubuntu Gutsy. This can cause some frustration since plugins that are not selected in the "Normal" or "Extra" modes have to be re-enabled in CCSM everytime Compiz dies and falls back to Metacity.
