Hmm.. I don't know what to say. I can still reproduce this on my machine..
However, I did see it once where the password I typed was hidden, but I 
couldn't reproduce that anymore either..

Not sure if this helps. But I use grub, and typed 'e' to edit the Linux boot, 
then I typed 'e' again on the line that reads:
kernel ...vmlinuz... root=UUID=... ro quiet splash
Then I added "single" at the end of those things.

The screen switches to the GUI bootup, then it switches back to the text
mode asking for the root password prompt. When I typed the root
password, it shows in clear text..

Is there anything I can try to help isolate the problem?
