I can now specify that this happens consistently on only one of my two computers, both of which have a nearly identical software setup. The only possible difference I can think of is that the one that has the problem is an AMD64 (running 32-bit Ubuntu) with an Nvidia card/driver. And I can confirm now that it's not a temporary glitch but persists between reboots.
