Very same thing here, using Hardy on a dell optiplex desktop. The thing
is really annoying. It happens only after long sleep times: usually I
come back in the morning and find my pc responsive to everything but the
keyboard. If I try restart sometimes it hangs and all I am left to do is
a cold poweroff. Other times it starts the restart process but then it
hangs with a segfault: no trace of it in the logs. Shutdown usually
works ok.

my kernel is 2.6.24-15-generic but this thing was present also with the
older kernels.

Glad I finally found this thread after days of research. My guess is
that the fact that no specific error message is given makes difficult to
people even complaint about it so this bug seems relatively infrequent
but it might well be a common one.
