Hmm, This morning I dist-upgraded the server and saw that there was a new 2.6.24-16-openvz package. I tried booting it and it failed with the same error: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 11s!
How come my kernel compiled from the ubuntu git works and the official package doesn't?
