@Bryce: Much thanks for your answers. Actually i'm a bit late reading your post, as i gave my notebook to a person next to me before a few days. I can still get some access to it, but the new owner really cares about stability and therefore wouldn't allow me much deeper testing, as it runs fine with the i810 driver. So sorry that i can't try test builds without optimizations.
But as you mentioned testing git stuff, i should say that a few weeks ago i worked a whole day with Hardy Alpha 6 in livecd mode on the laptop and there weren't any issues. Of course this doesn't completely proof that the bug hasn't made it over to Hardy, but it seems so. On my new HP nc6400 i did just go for Hardy Beta and also don't have there for further testing. As i can't do deep testing with other builds of the xserver on the nc6220, i will at least try to get Hardy final on it as soon as i have convinced the new owner, to proof Hardy doesn't contain the bug. So I will report my results here in a few weeks. @all others suffering from this bug: when you won't migrate to Hardy, just use the i810 driver or put Option "SWCursor" "1" into your xorg.conf (as i mentioned above) ... ... or do the testing stuff Bryce mentioned and try to find a fix ;) -- [gutsy] X crashes randomly - something with cursors?
