I have the same experience but: when I choose to find a user defined program to open the file and then click Cancel, firefox finds the appropriate program by itself. So it seems that Firefox at first cannot find the right application to handle the file, but when you cancel choosing the user defined application, then Firefox somehow finds the right program to handle the file.
