I got the same issues on a Thinkpad R61 with the GM965/GL960 and a desktop computer with the same graphics controller. Both upgraded to 8.04 beta - latest updates installed. The system locks up at least once a day - on laptop and desktop computer. Logging in via ssh / killing compiz.real is the only solution.
It seems that this problem occours only when I am doing drag & drop operations on the desktop - no matter in which program (experienced it in nautilus, gimp & amarok).
