Public bug reported:

Under 64bit hardy heron beta version, fresh install, with NVIDIA 680 SLi mobo, 
the network won't start unless some additional parameter is given to the 
"forcedeth" driver: msi=0 msix=0
(the solution is from google, but in an eariler distro)

Not sure if it's the same on 32bit, but it happened on my ASUS Striker
