Same problem on a Compaq nc6320, Ubuntu 8.04 RC1. I also see a console message (the second time) saying something like Freezing of tasks failed after 20 seconds. The task it mentions is khubd. Accordingly, it is not possible to attach a new USB storage device, like flash drive, to the computer.
