I think I should clarify something. When you initially go to share a folder a prompt comes up to install SAMBA. This is probably sufficient for most people, as most are operating in a *nix/Windows environment. In Gutsy you could choose SMB or NFS. In Hardy you are only given the SMB option. The omission of NFS may be intentional, but I think having the option in the GUI for NFS would be preferable.
