.. tested with version from your PPA, same result.
Steps to reproduce:
1) open gThumb
2) select one or more pictures
3) resize pictures
-> all memory will be used, I have to kill process

tested with different pictures formats.
scaling works with png, bmp but not with jpg!!

can not be a problem of a specific picture, because it fails
on pictures I managed to scale with gThumb some time ago.
