I have a BENQ DVD RW too an IDE 52 x model.
My problem is similar. But now, since I updated from 6.04 to 7.04and 7.10, I
can't eject it with the button or by right-clicking.
This dvd worked very well, with a 32 bit mother board under Sarge and Etch
(When I was a pure Debianer) and before under win 95 and 98.
It worked also when I passed it on this new mother board under AMD64, with two
controllers, thirst ide and second sata, worked under 32 and 64 bit version but
on 6.06 Edubuntu.

Problems seems append since the 7.04 and 7.10 version was installed.

"Sudo umount /etc/hdb" doesn't work, (can't umount rejected)
So I tried to resolve with this simple command line :
"sudo mount /etc/hdb" and it works !

I asked for myself if a comand like Hall or a script in gnome would be cause
this bug ?
Or if the update doesn't care of a module for the driver.
I say, there is, since 2007, new updates (under DOS) to flash the BIOS of BENQ
dvd driver, provided by this firm.
But i didn't thick this is the only cause. Perhaps a cross : I can't buned an
iso and a message of error persist on the end of a burning data or audio cd
session.
I tried many option (initd , modules etc... grub ...) , but at last! Problems
persist with this BENQ DVD drive under Gutsy.
