Well, I just found out what is firefox doing during this high cpu and disk activity - it does something nasty with the urlclassifier3.sqlite file (about 20MB in size) in may home firefox profile directory. The urlclassifier3.sqlite is being touched and the urlclassifier3.sqlite- journal file constantly grows.
I just googled around and found this: http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=22714 (look for "Firefox 3 beta 1 memory hog on Windows").
