jockey is too dumb to know whether the current video driver is
composite-capable, it only knows for the ones it explicitly knows about.

It would be more robust and easier if the applet would just try and
start compiz (which checks for the driver capabilities), and only if
that fails, call jockey --check-composite. Then the current exit code
semantics would do the right thing.
