No difference whatsoever. Tell me what detail you need, please. I
thought my first report was pretty clear...

The strange thing is the difference between my Gutsy install on my notebook and 
my Hardy install on my desktop. Using gconf-editor on the notebook allows the 
trash icon to appear on the desktop- screenshot attached.
Both systems are running compiz and are configured very similarly in 
application selection, etc, aside from kernel and release, of course.
I wouldn't call this a high priority item, but it should work the same way 
across releases. Two systems setup much the same way and functionality 
disappears between releases would seem to indicate something fell through the 
cracks. The second screenshot should help make this clear.
