** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 8.04
Upgraded from 7.10 by update manager. System would not shutdown or log off at
splash screen. Splash screen disappears and the background is displayed but
nothing else. Pressing the machine's power button produces a black screen with
messages as follows
  Starting anac(h)ronistic cron anacron [OK]
- Starting battery check [OK]
- plus several others
- then error messages about Network Manager which appear too quick to read.
+ Checking battery state [OK]
+ Running local boot scripts [OK]
+ plus several others, then a pause for several seconds
+ then messages about Network Manager which appear too quick to read.
I then did a fresh install from the Ubuntu 8.04 alternate DVD, formatting the
/root partition but keeping my /home partition. The problem disappeared. I
installed a couple of packages - Bluefish and Filezilla then used the Network
Settings to set up a Static IP address, installed Samba and pyNeighbourhood to
connect to a Windows machine. Following that the problem returned.
  Wired network using Linksys WAG54GS
Nvidia graphics card using NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver.
  Shutdown OK using CTRL+Alt+Backspace
