Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vim-tiny

Hi,

I recently did a fresh install of 8.04 on a virtual private server. I
was confused and frustrated because vi was not working correctly on my
default install when I was ssh'd into the machine. It would not go into
insert mode when I hit 'i' and it would exhibit other erratic
behaviours.

I spent about an hour fiddling with terminal emulation settings,
thinking it was iTerm's fault. When I took a break from trying to make
that work and copy config files around, I found that vim complained
about the .vimrc that I have working on another 8.04 installation. I
compared the versions that vim displays as a part of the startup message
and they matched.

I did a dpkg -l | grep vim on both machines and discovered vim-tiny was
the only thing (apart from vim-common) installed on the machine I was
having trouble with. apt-get install vim fixed my problems.

However, I think that the version numbers that vim displays when you
open it up for a blank file or when you do --verison should be changed
in vim-tiny to reflect the fact that it is not vim proper. This will
avoid confusion. version 7.1.138-tiny would be acceptable; anything to
differentiate between vim proper and vim-tiny is fine.

Regards.
