I have the same problem with my Radeion 9550 using fglrx driver. After I desabled fglrx and switched to use Open Source ATI driver the problem has gone. Thus the problem without any doubts in fglrx driver.
I've not tried the patch mentioned above yet, since I've just learned about it.
