I've tried all of the above tweaks, including killing pulseaudio, and
have failed to get any playback sound.

I use Audacity for professional work. The only thing I can do now is
send the files I've recorded to another (Windoze) machine and edit the
recorded file there.

I can't record on the Windows smachine because it's way too noisy -
which is why I was recording on my Laptop under Hardy.

I *could* revert to Gutsy, but am loathe to do so unless I really have
to.
